Overview

As a Rail Technician/Mechanic, you will be responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing Railjet and other field equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations. This role is primarily focused on equipment maintenance and troubleshooting but also requires flexibility to perform Railjet Technician 3 (RJT3) field duties when mechanic workload is light. You will work closely with field crews and operational leadership to ensure project readiness, minimize equipment downtime, and support successful execution of geohazard mitigation projects.

Responsibilities

Mechanic Responsibilities:

  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on Railjet equipment, grout and shotcrete pumps, forklifts, and other heavy machinery.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and parts inventory.
  • Coordinate with field teams to ensure equipment is available and operational for upcoming projects.
  • Monitor and enforce safety protocols, OSHA regulations, and company policies.
  • Respond to urgent field service needs and prioritize equipment issues based on operational requirements.

 

Field Support (RJT3 Responsibilities):

  • Operate Railjet equipment, forklifts, Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, and skid-steers.
  • Support shotcrete and grout pump operations, including mix design and application to project specifications.
  • Assist with site preparation, hazard mitigation, and material distribution.
  • Provide basic equipment maintenance and cleaning at the job site.
  • Mentor and support lower-level technicians when required.
  • Use tablets, phones, and computers for documentation and communication of job activities.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Ensure construction sites are clear of hazards and comply with safety standards.
  • Load, unload, and identify materials, tools, and equipment, distributing them as required by project plans.
  • Lubricate, clean, or repair machinery and tools as needed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Fleet Director.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain client-required Rail certification.  
  • Proficiency in mechanical diagnostics, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment.
  • Expertise in shotcrete and grout pump operation preferred (training provided if necessary).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in heavy equipment maintenance, with hands-on repair experience.
  • Prior Railroad experience or equivalent field construction experience preferred.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and implement solutions quickly.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and project plans.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on teamwork and safety.

 

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  

  • Climates vary in degrees, in tropical to desert environments.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate and hearing protection is often required.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Regular heavy lifting (75lbs+) of construction materials on the job site.

Travel

Up to 100% travel across the U.S.

 

Compensation

  • $35 - $45/hour
  • Hourly rate based on your experience. In general, our pay scale increases for:
    • More years of experience and technical expertise with the tools and technologies in drilling.
    • Ability to drive (CMV or CDL)
    • Experience or certifications for heavy equipment operations (skid steer, forklift, Bobcat, Scissor lift, or CDL vehicles.)
    • Experience with shotcrete or grouting pumps on the job.
    • Experience directing teams, managing customer interactions, or managing projects.
  • All positions earn overtime
  • 100% paid travel
