Job Summary

As a Principal Engineer at GSI, you will serve as both a technical leader and people developer, guiding a team of engineers while remaining hands-on with complex project work. Acting as a player/coach, you’ll mentor and grow engineering talent, set high standards for design and estimating quality, and ensure the team delivers exceptional client service. In this role, you will be accountable for all estimating and engineering activities within your assigned geographic region and/or client sector. This includes overseeing proposal development, ensuring accuracy and completeness in designs and estimates, and partnering with project managers and sales teams to deliver innovative, cost-effective geotechnical solutions.

Responsibilities

Technical Leadership to the Design Team

  • Provide analysis, design, and estimation of projects from simple to complex.
  • Function as Engineer of Record (EOR) for projects.
  • Ensure elegant design and design efficiency.
  • Monitor quality of deliverables.
  • Serve as external technical expert supporting GSI technical reputation and in client meetings and negotiations.
  • Identifies and coordinates the use of external consultants and SMEs, including contract negotiation, review of work products, and approving invoicing.

Team Leadership

  • Ensure and guide the professional development of team members
  • Review and balance workload leveling across the team
  • Responsible for hiring best in class talent for the work of today and the future
  • Lead efforts to improve and sustain team engagement
  • Manage team assignments according to work demands, skills of team members, and developmental goals
  • Monthly 1-on1s, mid and end of year reviews

Provide leadership on Process Design and Evolution

  • On time delivery of deliverables
  • Review of team timecards for appropriate efforts
  • Be the voice of the Design team on the development of cross functional tools and efficiencies
  • Serving on Estimating and Design Group Leadership Team

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or similar equivalent.
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • PE license required.
  • Experience leading teams and achieving performance metrics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS in Civil or Geological Engineering, with Geotechnical or Geostructural emphasis.
  • 15+ years of relevant professional experience in multiple aspects of geotechnical engineering design and construction.
  • GE and/or SE certification.
  • Numerical modeling experience.
  • Experience leading interdisciplinary teams.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • In depth knowledge of the principles and practices of Engineering Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, and Geotechnical Construction.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize judgement, data, and analytical tools to solve engineering problems in a fast paced, frontline construction-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse teams to accomplish clear results.
  • Demonstrated Ability to manage risk and ambiguity.
  • Demonstrated understanding of construction means, methods, costs, and schedules to drive efficient and correct estimates.

This role will be in-office on a hybrid schedule. Employees will be expected to work in the Westminster, CO office 3 days per week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

 

The expected annual base salary range for this position in the Denver, CO area is $140,000 - $160,000. Salary ranges are dependent on a variety of factors, including qualifications, experience and geographic location. Range is not inclusive of potential bonus or benefits.
